A mere 20 miles from scenic Newport in the Northern Woods is a small family owned and operated ski area named New Hermon. This modest 450 foot summit has an incredibly diverse amount of terrain, despite its lack of vertical height. From small cliff drops, unofficial glades, and wide beginner trails around the mountain's perimeter, taking advantage of the mountain's width, New Hermon's 75 acres are sure to keep any skier or rider entertained for a full day or more.
New Hermon is open weekdays from 3pm to 9pm, except for Thursday and Fridays when it stays open till 10pm. On Saturday they are open from 9am to 10pm and Sunday from 9am to 4pm. These varied hours give a lot of flexibility to visitors wanting to come at the best time to suit their needs. Night skiing is a very important feature of New Hermon throughout their December to March season.
The 21 slopes, as mentioned before, offer the recreational and hardcore rider a chance to make turns, and carve into whatever terrain they desire. A very nice feature is that because the intermediate and beginner trails snake around the ski boundary lines, it gives ample space to practice on instead of just small bunny hills. There are two chairlifts here and one is a T-bar, which is an experience in and of itself for those not used to them. A small terrain park is open that features rails and some jumps along with a halfpipe.
Private lessons are available every day but need to be reserved in advance by phone. Group lessons are given by the ski school only on weekends, so plan accordingly.
Adult, and junior rates for 12 years of age and under, are available for purchase at the ticketing counter. Children under the age of 4, and seniors over 70, ski or ride free at New Hermon. There are full, half day, and night passes sold daily, as well as a full service rental, repair, and tune-up shop onsite.
New Hermon's snowtubing park is open from Wednesday to Sunday. Its 600 foot lanes and chutes will keep everyone occupied, playing and sliding in the cold air. There are video games in the lodge, as well as a snack bar with cafeteria seating for when hunger pains strike.
Head into Newport, 20 miles away, for delis, Asian, fast food, and even Hawaiian food! There are two motels and two campgrounds also located in Newport for lodging options. Beware that Hinkley Hill Road, which leads from Newport to New Hermon's entrance, often gets very slick, as it's downhill, so please take your time, and be alert so as to save unwanted trouble before you even hit the slopes!
With varied terrain, family friendly service, and affordable rates, New Hermon is the quintessential place to ski this season.
