Our Ski Specialist Says:

Nicknamed the "Little Gem" by SKI Magazine, Mount Abram has some heavy competition to live up to, with the much larger Sunday River ski resort being located just up the road. But aiming high, literally 2245 feet in the air, Mount Abram is a wonderful hidden treasure often overlooked by the crowds who aren't in the know.

A logical layout of 44 trails make Mount Abram very customer friendly. To the left of the summit is the beginners' slope, the middle has the intermediate trails, and to the right is for advanced or expert riders. 3 glade areas, a bumps run, and a headwall make advanced riders feel like they're working out and give a great run to all. Cross-country skiing is complimentary at Mount Abram if alpine just isn't your thing.

Four terrain parks call Mount Abram home, and feature jibs, boxes, a halfpipe, and perhaps the most interesting rails in the nation. The rails are actually recycled monorail tracks from 1979 that originally passed through Bethel and Portland, so riders are literally riding history!

Tiny Tracks, for 3 to 5 year olds, and the Abram Adventurers, from 7 to 14 year olds, are programs that include lunch in addition to lessons as a full day package from the ski school, however reservations are required. There is a daycare center available, cutely named the "Bullwinkle Babies," which cares for children aged 6 months to 6 years old and is limited to 12 children at any time. Parents must bring their own snacks and lunch for the kids here. Mount Abram's ski school handles all learn to ski/snowboard, freestyle, and private or group lessons with the finesse and ease befitting a professionally staffed ski school.

EMS Appreciation, military, college, and "Friday Crazy Carload" discounts are easy to get ahold of, making Abram affordable for any age or number of people who come. Full, half, or Westside beginner's area lift passes are sold at child through senior rates. Children aged 5 or under ski or ride free with a paying adult. Skis, snowboards, Telemark, helmets, and snowshoes are all available for rent by packages or individual pieces in the rental hut, and there is also an onsite tune-up shop.

On Saturday, Sunday, and holidays, the longest snowtubing park in Maine, the "Flying Squirrel," opens up its 1325 foot lanes with numerous tubes and great fun to be had by all. Two base lodges, with a free shuttle bus in between each, are located on site and have a cafeteria and lounge with live entertainment on the weekends. You may also want to take advantage of the proximity to Sunday River and gain a wide range of après ski events.

Twenty plus lodging options are available in the surrounding towns of Bethel, Waterford, Paris, and Rumford, with inns, private rentals, motels, and bed and breakfasts, making a long weekend, or even just an overnight stay, an option for Mount Abram's guests. Some even offer ski and stay packages if you ask before booking the rooms.

Competing with Sunday River is not the easiest thing for a ski resort of Mount Abram's size to do, but they consistently soar high above any other small ski area in the vicinity. Their unique features, the easy layout of their trails, and their affordable rates make Mount Abram a ski area that should be highly sought after this winter season.
