Located near Rumford, in the Longfellow Mountains of western Maine, Black Mountain is a resort focused on family fun and learning. The great combination of cozy and old-fashioned charm and a modern winter paradise are key to providing affordable mountain fun for all Black Mountain's visitors.
With 20 trails serviced by four lifts, Black Mountain has the feel of a small mountain, but its 1,150 foot vertical drop gives it the challenging aspects of the larger mountains. Despite its size, Black Mountain is a relaxing, peaceful and relatively quiet mountain, and skiing it is an enjoyable experience. The combination of its breathtaking views and its varied and challenging trails make Black Mountain a great place to explore.
Black Mountain is a fully snowboarder friendly mountain, with a great terrain park equipped with a 300 foot long half pipe, 12 foot walks, 2 grind rails, a table, and several other features on which to try out your tricks. Black Mountain is open daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm, except for Sunday when the mountain closes at 4:00pm to give the employees some time off. Make sure to also check out the mountain's night skiing.
For those looking for a non-alpine activity, Black Mountain is known as one of the finest Nordic skiing facilities in North America. It offers over 15 miles of trails developed by former two-time Olympian Chummy Broomhall. These trails were the site of the 2003 and 2004 Chevrolet US Cross Country Championships. Skiers of all abilities are welcome on these trails, and anyone will be able to easily find their way on the 15 foot wide and groomed trails. Those looking for more of an adrenaline rush will want to check out the Edge Tubing Park, with its own lift and 5 lanes, where people of all ages can zip down the mountain.
For a little lunchtime break, check out the slope-side cafeteria. Featuring the ever-popular Last Run Lounge, with a rustic feel and a modern edge, this non-smoking beam lodge has two fireplaces where you can get yourself a quick warm-up before hitting the slopes anew.
All dining and lodging in the region can be found in the Bethel area. With over 30 restaurants, ranging from hamburgers and pizza to sushi and seafood, there's something to suit anybody's tastes and budget. For a little evening entertainment, the local bars and pubs offer up folk singers, karaoke, piano music, and live rock bands. Make sure to ask a local about Hoot Night, which is an open mic night for local and visiting musicians.
Lodging of every kind and cost can be found in the Bethel region. These include B&Bs, country inns, campgrounds, chalets, rental homes, and even dormitory style lodging.
If you're making your way by car to the ski area, make sure it's the kind of car that can carry its weight through the snowy terrain on the way up to the mountain.
