Visit the largest lake east of the Mississippi contained within one state! Moosehead Lake is filled with wilderness and pristine waters, and is perfect for nature lovers - a fabulous retreat for those who just want to get away from it all.
Thoreau explored the Moosehead Lake region with Indian guides in the mid-1800's, and only a century ago visitors began to arrive by train and vacation in the grand hotels on the shores of Moosehead Lake's clear waters. Today, visitors to Moosehead can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and fly fishing or world-class white water rafting. There are countless biking trails, and great bird and wildlife watching. Those seeking a more sedentary and relaxing vacation can enjoy a scenic cruise on the historic steamship Katahdin, or a round of golf on the Squaw Mountain Village Golf Course. If visiting in the winter months, you can choose from skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and more. There are plenty of great restaurants in the vicinity, and the camping opportunities here are endless and promise a quiet, secluded evening away.
