North Woods of Maine Getaways

This is one of the most forested areas in the United States, with thousands of remote lakes and rivers to explore. Moose, deer, caribou, and bears are more common sights here than people. Nature is the main attraction, with hiking, biking, rafting, paddling, fishing, and skiing being the main activities.

Baxter Vacation Spots

If you plan on vacationing in Baxter, then it's straight into the woods you shall go. Baxter's main attraction, Baxter State Park, offers tourists with a huge selection of wilderness, nature, and recreational activities amidst the spruce, balsam, and birch trees that decorate the area.
Enjoy over 200 miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as numerous lakes and streams. Camping out in Baxter State Park is a must!

Another popular vacation spot in Baxter is up and down Mt. Katahdin, "the Greatest Mountain." This mountainous area, known for its beauty, its wide open spaces, and its chirping songbirds, is also the ending point (or the starting point, depending on where you're coming from) of the Appalachian Trail. The Penobscot River is also nearby and offers 14 miles of Class III - IV rapids.

Moosehead Lake Vacation Spots

Moosehead Lake, located in the Maine Highlands Region, is the largest lake east of the Mississippi that doesn't overflow into any other state. It is a haven for nature lovers and a vacation spot that the whole family will love. Unlike other smaller lakes in the region that host only meager campgrounds or small hotels, the shores of the Moosehead Lake contain grand hotels that stand regally against the clear blue of the lake.

When we say Moosehead Lake is also a fine vacation spot…we mean it. Regular lake activities like fishing and swimming are available, as well as more river-like activities like canoeing, kayaking, and white water rafting. Non-lake activities include hiking in the surrounded wooded and mountainous areas, bike riding around the lake and through mountain trails, and viewing birdlife and wildlife up close and personal.

Want more of a luxury vacation at Moosehead Lake? You can take a cruise on the historic steamship "Katahdin," or play a round of golf at the Squaw Mountain Village Golf Course.

Winter visitors to Moosehead Lake can enjoy snowmobiling, ice fishing, and skiing at nearby slopes, including the Big Squaw Ski Resort in Greenville Junction, Maine.

Maine Tourist Attractions

If you head west towards New Hampshire you'll encounter two more of Maine's best kept secrets, the town of Bethel and Grafton Notch State Park.

Located at the foot of Vermont's White Mountains, Bethel wins top prize for most beautiful mountain village. You'll fall in love with this idyllic little town the moment you see its breathtaking hiking and biking trails, the quaint stores and restaurants located along Main Street, world-class ski resorts, and the local arts. Santa's Village, a family-owned theme park, is a great stop for families to make, offering shows, workshops, rides, and a bakery where kids can decorate their own, jumbo-sized gingerbread men.

The town is also rich in history and history-inclined visitors can check out the Bethel Historical Society for a look into the American and Native American history of the region.

If you head north from Bethel you'll hit Grafton Notch State Park—in fact, sharing the title of one of Maine's largest state park, you'll have no choice but hit this mammoth park, located along the Mahoosuc mountain range. Highlights in the park include the Appalachian Trail, Old Speck Mountain, Mother Walker Falls, Moose Cave, and the glacial sculpting of Screw Auger Falls. Trees, mountains, trails, rivers, lakes, caves, and meadows make up the scenery of this 3,000 acre park. In the summer you can picnic in a flower-filled field, and in the winter you can take advantage of the snowmobile trails.

Pick a spot to leave the car, and set off into the wilderness for a few days. Or, just enjoy nature from your lakeside cabin. The best part about this sparsely populated region is that it provides a true refuge from busy city life, or even small town life. You can enter the wilderness of the North Woods and completely forget that the rest of the world exists. For some people, this solitude and quiet is also pure paradise. Whatever you do, don't rush—it'll knock the natural serenity of the area off balance. Take your time and enjoy nature at its finest. And please don't shoot the moose.
