Mt. Katahdin and Baxter State Park, Maine Outdoor Recreation
Baxter State Park is the prime area of outdoor recreation in the Maine North Woods, attracting sport fishermen, hikers and canoeists. The extensive (175 mile) trail system in Baxter State Park includes some of the best hikes in Maine. They range from easy to difficult and scale the main peaks of Baxter State Park. The climb up Burnt Mountain is relatively easy and suitable for families. Those in physical shape should attempt the strenuous all-day climb to the summit of Mt. Katahdin, the highest point in Maine and the terminus of the Appalachian Trail. If you are traveling in the early fall you may bump into some very serious hikers completing their 6 month and 2500-mile trek.
Canoeists will enjoy the experience of paddling deep into the wilderness on the Allagash and St. John Rivers. The lakes, streams and rivers are suited for multi-day canoe or kayak trips. One of the most popular, the 92 mile long Allagash Wilderness Waterway makes for a good five to ten day trip.
Be aware that most of the roads in the Maine North Woods are logging roads. Make sure your car can hold its own on the rough dirt roads and against big logging trucks. Bicycles are not allowed on the logging roads, but there are dedicated mountain biking trails in the area.
Moosehead Lake and Maine North Woods Outdoor Recreation
Moosehead Lake was not named by the Maine marketing department – with some effort you will see moose around here. In fact, there are organized moose safaris either by jeep or canoe. The town of Greenville is the jumping-off point for various outdoor sports and activities around Moosehead Lake, including mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing and of course, canoeing and kayaking. Snowmobiling is popular with 100's of miles of trails around Moosewood Lake.
