Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:
The Maine Lobster Festival is a big deal for the small town of Rockland, Maine. Local residents look forward to the 5-day early-August affair all year. It is one of New England's most anticipated summer events, and one of Maine's oldest festivals. Located in Rockland's Harbor Park with a beautiful view of Penobscott Bay, the festival attracts hordes of avid lobster fans. At least 20,000 pounds of the shellfish are cooked each year in the world's largest lobster cooker.
However, much more than lobster draws crowds to this annual event. People look forward to the friendly competition of the Lobster Crate Race and Seafood Cooking Contest, as well as live performances of jazz, celtic, reggae and folk music, and stand-up comedy. In a series of themed tents, visitors can peruse and buy art, local Maine crafts, and home made food. There are also plenty of games and contests geared especially for children.
Don't miss the festival's Saturday morning "Big" Parade as it files down Main Street. Over 25,000 people come to see the show, featuring bands, marching units, colorful floats, drill teams and more. The next morning spectators return to the area to cheer at the annual 10K road race. Many look forward to the coronation of the Sea Goddess. Twenty young women compete for this title, which also includes scholarships, prizes and the opportunity to represent the lobster industry with appearances throughout New England.
Admission cost for the festival varies. The first day, known as "Hometown Day," is always free, with admission prices rising each subsequent day until the final day, which is discounted. Children under 5 years old are always admitted for free. Daily tickets must be bought at the gates, but four-day passes can be purchased beforehand online. There are several hotels nearby, but reservations are strongly suggested due to large tourist volume during the event.
Harbor Park is a four-hour drive from Boston and two hours from Portland, Maine. Visitors can also take the train to Rockland on the Maine Eastern Railroad.
