Our Museum Expert Says:

Take a ride on a train at a functioning, operating railway, home to trains over 80 years old! Learn the history and technology of the rails at this unique and historical living rail museum.

In the late 19th century, Maine was home to several narrow-gauge railways, operating on rails two feet apart. Though most of these trains have disappeared, this nonprofit organization preserves the examples that remain. Originally built in 1993 by volunteers, the tracks here are on the right of way of the former Canadian National Railroad. Today, visitors can enjoy free museum admission and 35-minute rides on diesel or steam locomotives. Children can celebrate their birthdays on the special car reserved just for birthday parties.

Refreshments are available in the museum, which is located at 58 Fore Street, on the water front in Portland; so pack your things and head on over to the Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. and Museum.
