Discover, imagine and play! Enjoy learn-by-doing exhibits and tons of special programs that allow kids to explore the inside of a camera. Experience climbing a mountain and much, much more!
The Children's Museum of Maine is a center for exploration and learning that welcomes more than 100,000 visitors annually, and is a must see for kids of all ages. Children can actually climb a mountain, enter a bear's den, role-play being a crewmember on a 40-foot schooner, and man a space shuttle, as well as run a supermarket checkout counter, or slide down a firehouse pole. Science-oriented children will love the computer lab and the TV studio where they can record their own programs. The whole family can enjoy together in the camera obscura, which provides a panoramic view of Portland and Casco Bay, gather around a white table in a dark room, and see projected images that include cars driving on city streets and seagulls flapping by.
All the fun definitely pumps up the appetite, and when you're ready to re-fuel, there are tables and chairs located on the lower level for eating your own picnic or snack. Also available are vending machines with juice, water and snacks. If you're looking for some more serious grub, Congress St. is filled with dining options and the Old Port is just steps away. Menus from local eateries are available at the Museum's Front Desk, as well as a list of family friendly eateries.
To reach the Children's Museum of Maine from I-295 N or I-295 S: take exit 6-A (Forest Ave. South). Bear right at the lights onto Rt. 77 South and proceed through the park. Continue up the hill (Rt. 77/State Street). At the top of the hill take a left onto Congress Street. Proceed 2/10 mile, cross High Street and immediately bear right onto Free Street. The museum is on the right, immediately after the Portland Museum of Art.
