Our History Buff Says:

Learn all about the trials of the first French settlement, its architecture and the initial experience of the harsh winter that the French endured on Saint Croix Island. This International Historic Site is one of quietude and respect prompted by history and maintained by the serene nature surrounding.

Focused on establishing a quiet atmosphere to promote contemplation of the heroism and suffering of the French colonists in early 1600, the Saint Croix Island International Historic Site is a beautiful spot filled with scenic island views and the stunning Saint Croix River. Visitors to the area can relax and enjoy a picnic while gazing at awesome vistas and can wander along the short interpretive trail at the mainland site where bronze figures of the French and Passamaquoddy stand boldly. History buffs will love the exhibits highlighting historic events and the interaction of the two cultures, as well as the model of the 1604 French settlement which sits under a shelter overlooking the island. Though visits to the actual island (6.5 acres) are not encouraged due to its fragile nature, the mainland areas of St. Stephen and St. Andrews offer a variety of historic sites, recreational opportunities, restaurants, shops, and more.

To get to Saint Croix Island International Historic Site from St. Stephen, take NB 1 east to Route 127. After about five miles, you'll start to see signs marked with a beaver symbol. Follow them to the site. Private boats take visitors from the shore to the island. Relive the early American history at the site of French colonization—the history of the area, blended with the beauty of the landscape make for a perfect day at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site!
