Things to do / Travel Guide
Address:Saco, Maine
Named for the ferry which crosses the nearby Saco River, Ferry Beach State Park offers visitors a wealth of beach based activity, from ocean swimming and clam digging to surf fishing and shell collecting, but that's just the beginning. Besides the miles of white sand beaches, visitors can enjoy hikes on the park trail system, choosing from several loops and combinations of walks through the pine, oak, and hemlock forests. Those who fancy fishing will enjoy the small freshwater lake nearby—also great for some contemplation in nature. And nature enthusiasts should get a kick out of exploring the protected Tupelo swamp, home to the very rare Black Tupelo Tree (also known as a black gum tree) and dunes which have strong grass that both protects the dunes from erosion and provides nesting sights for bird species, as well. Visitors should check out the picnic area for a memorable family meal. Note that besides the changing room that's available in rest areas for those traveling with babies, in general, the amenities here are rustic. Also: though the trails are open year-round, the signs are taken out during late fall, winter and early spring for storage and maintenance, so plan accordingly.
