Things to do / Travel Guide

Winterport Winery

The Winterport Winery opened its doors in the fall of 2001, but interestingly got its start 30 years earlier when a home wine-making kit was given to the proprietors as a Christmas gift. The hobby eventually turned into full-time work and a family-run business. The winery now occupies a 3,200-square-foot work area and 1,100-square-foot tasting room. Come sample the great and unique wines, such as the fruity and surprisingly sophisticated Blueberry, Pear, Apple, Strawberry, Raspberry Rain, Spring Fever, Orchard Blush, Cranberry, and Flying Dutchman.
There is also a tasting room on the premises adorned with artwork from one of the family members (she does the labels, too), as well as hand-crafted chocolates, gifts, and other goodies. Stop by for a visit - they're open from the first weekend in April through the last weekend in December. Hours are Tuesday-Thursday 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

Cellar Door Winery and Vineyards

Old World charm meets the wine bottle at this eclectic Maine Coast winery. Here, wines are hand-crafted in the Old Word tradition, and the proprietors grow and press their own grapes, too. There is a great garden that visitors can picnic in, a gift shop that sells an interesting array of local items. Of course there are also wine tastings and bottles available for purchase. This winery is nothing if not prolific in its output, offering at various times during the year Amorosa, Apple, Blue Lobster Blue, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cantina Porta, Cayuga White, Chardonnay, DeChaunac, Fumuso Bianco, Marechal Foch, Pearro, Perfect Stranger, Queen Anne's Lace, Reisling, Sweetheart, Valentina Rosa, and Vino DiVine. Cheers! The winery is open daily from mid-May-mid-October.
