Things to do / Travel Guide

The best time to visit the Maine Coast region is probably towards summer and fall, as it never gets too hot and precipitation is limited to the occasional thunderstorm or shower. The weather is simply sublime then; they don't call this state “Vacationland” for nothing. Winter, on the other hand is quite cold, with lots of snow and strong winds. Spring, which comes rather late in the year, remains cold and wet, with thick fog and grey skies.

This region is the origin of the nor'easter, the low-pressure storm systems that tend towards the coasts often causing flooding, coastal erosion, and gale force winds. They usually hit hardest in the winter and spring seasons, and are not at all uncommon. The perpetual fog that lasts throughout these seasons is due to the cooling effect of the Atlantic Ocean.
