Things to do / Travel Guide
The most practical way to get around the Maine Coast is unquestionably by car. If you are a visitor here, the best bet is therefore a rental car. It gives you the independence to make the most of your stay, while being pretty reasonable in terms of cost, to boot. If you intend to travel around the region by car, keep in mind that winter driving can be tricky, as this is a cold and snowy climate. Spring can go either way. Summer, however, aside from the occasional rainstorm, is a great time to drive the roads of the Maine Coast.
The region does, however, also have a public transportation infrastructure. In the region's main cities, like Portland, you will find all the usual methods of transport - bus, cab, car rentals, modern freeways, plenty of parking, etc. It's when you get into the rural areas that it becomes more challenging. There is only one commuter train, and it runs the Portland/Boston route several times daily, passing through New Hampshire as well. There is commercial interstate bus service offered, but the schedule is spotty.
