The Maine Coast region offers a pleasantly-diverse set of entertainment options - everything from major concerts in big areas and amphitheaters to cool jazz in small, intimate venues, and lots more in between. Certainly the best time to catch a show is during the peak summer months, but for those hearty enough to come in winter, there are still some goings-on worth catching. Here are some suggestions to make your visit, well, entertaining:
Jazz Music
The Armory Restaurant at the Portland Regency Hotel hosts a jazz pianist every Friday and Saturday night. You can also catch some jazz every Saturday at the Bridgeway Restaurant in Olgunquit. Every Sunday, it's worth it to head over to the Breakwater Lounge in Rockport to catch Stan Catell from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., year-round.
Classical Music
The L.L. Bean Summer Concert Series is held annually, all summer long at Discovery Park in Freeport. Check local listings for this great free series. Also, a highly entertaining Classical Music option is to catch the Portland Symphony Orchestra at Merrill Auditorium. Concerts are held year-round, and the orchestra is conducted by Toshiyuki Shimada, Music Director Laureate.
Rock Music
There are several hot venues for nationally- and internationally-known rock acts. Venues such as Cumberland County Civic Center, the Merrill Auditorium, and the State Street Theater (all in Portland) play host to acts such as Ziggy Marley, Shania Twain, Kelly Clarkson, Three Doors Down, The Temptations, American Idols Live, and many others. Book your tickets in advance!
Comedy
There are a number of comedy venues throughout the Maine Coast, many hosting nationally-known acts. One such location is The Comedy Connection in Portland. There are usually two shows nightly, year-round, so check local listings to see who's yucking it up!
General
A great place to catch a show in the region is the Boothbay Opera House. They host a variety of local and national musical and performing acts year-round.
