Visit the home of our 26th president at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Cove Neck, New York. The only presidential site on Long Island, the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site honors President Theodore Roosevelt, the renowned diplomat, strategist and internationalist. The hundred pristine acres of the Sagamore Hill National Historic site are now open to tourists looking for a unique experience on the Long Island coast.
In 1880, Theodore Roosevelt, then only 22, bought 155 aces of land which eventually became the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, near Oyster Bay, New York. In 1884, he commissioned New York based architectural firm Lamb & Rich to design a home for the property. While president, Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill residence became known as the "Summer White House," as Theodore and his wife, Edith, spent the summers there throughout his presidency.
Today, visitors have the opportunity to experience the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site on several levels. There is a one hour guided tour of the Roosevelt home, where little has changed since 1910, including Roosevelt's hunting trophies decorating the 23 room house. There is also a self-guided tour of the Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard, originally built as a family home by General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., with exhibits and movies telling the story of President Roosevelt's life. Finally, visitors to the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site can walk the Sagamore Hill Nature Trail, the same trail Roosevelt and his family walked to get to the beachfront to sit and enjoy the view. Unfortunately, there is no food available at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, so visitors should bring their own, or they may travel to nearby Oyster Bay and enjoy a wide variety of restaurant options.
To get to the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, visitors should take either the Northern State Parkways to exit 35N or I-495 to exit 41N. Then take Route 106 North, turn east on Route 25A, turn northwest at the third traffic light and take Cove Road. Finally turn north on Cove Neck Road and follow the signs to Sagamore Hill. Bring the whole family to the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site and enjoy your walk in the footsteps of one of America's great presidents!
