Our Beach Bum Says:

Brace yourself, because Fire Island National Seashore is not your typical day at the beach! Brimming with nature and tons of great opportunities for outdoor fun, this beach experience will have everyone feeling sparks. The Island is a big draw for city escapees looking to work on their tan and cool off with a dive into the Atlantic or Great South Bay, but that's just the beginning of the fun to be had here. Bodysurfers and surf-casters will love the crashing waves that pound the coast here and you can work on your physique in sea kayaks or explore the bay's calm waters. Windsurfing and water skiing (especially during the hurricane season's ten foot waves) are also popular at Fire Island. When you do hit the waves on the ocean beaches (either on a board or a boat), be aware of riptides and rough seas. Remember, swimming and other water sports are better enjoyed within designated locations where lifeguards are on duty. Also, swimming is not permitted in fishing areas, marinas, or near boat traffic. Lovers of nature will find fulfillment in the wildlife viewing on Fire Island and when you need some time to cool off, the forest also offers a great shady respite and is filled with shorebirds, songbirds, and deer. Visitors can take a hike among the 32 miles of beach shoreline around the island or head to the Sunken Forest, next to Sailors Haven, for miles of boardwalks which wind through twisted trees. Remember to take precautions against the heat and ticks when hiking through this area. Finally, if you really want to take it all in, you may need more than one day and if you want to sleep over, you'll have your choice of Fire Island rentals, summer share beach houses, or one of the a good Fire Island hotels, but reserve in advance to make sure you get your choice of lodging.
