When it comes to professional hockey, the roughly 7½ million residents of Long Island have a team to call their own. The New York Islanders hit the ice every year at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Stadium, located in Uniondale, about 20 miles from New York City. The island also accommodates Belmont Park, the largest dirt track in thoroughbred racing. Belmont Park is home to the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of horseracing's Triple Crown series. Long Island will also host the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park, the first publicly-owned and operated course to ever receive such an honor.
