And for a natural (and crunchy) shopping excursion, stop by Long Island's farmers markets and farm stands that offer mouth-watering displays of locally grown crisp fruits and veggies.

Main Street Shopping around Long Island, New York

Perhaps to make it easy for tourists to remember, many of the best shopping districts in Long Island quaint towns are centered on their Main Streets. Celebrities often choose Amagansett Square on Amagansett's Main Street, considered to be one of the Hamptons' most opulent shopping districts. Amagansett looks much like a quaint New England village and the central square is surrounded by endearing boutiques. Stony Brook Village Center, on Stony Brook's antiquated Main Street (on the North Shore) features nearly 50 specialty shops. Southampton's Main Street is lined with upscale boutiques selling jewelry, fine china, and antiques. Right on the waterfront, Main Street, in Cold Spring Harbor, is known for its glassware, terrafin candles, and fancy hat shop.

Other favorite shopping areas include Roslyn's Old Northern Boulevard, with its charming independent retailers, personalized skin care shop, designer clothes, and boutique shoes stores. Seventh Street in Garden City has a popular downtown shopping area with art galleries and specialty shops of all varieties. The Freeport Nautical Mile near Jones Beach on the waterfront offers a wide variety of boat and nautical shops, and Bridgehampton's Montauk Highway features some of the Hamptons finest antique shops and home furnishing stores. For Long Island's best antiques, go to Locust Valley, and drive through the Gold Coast's back roads. In this tiny hamlet decidedly off the beaten path, you'll find plenty of large and small antique dealers.

Farmers Markets and Farm Stands around Long Island, New York

Quite a few Long Island towns have their own farmers markets and farm stands. Noteworthy farmers markets can be found in Montauk and Amagansett, among other Long Island towns, and are usually open from May to October. Farm stands sell local, seasonal produce usually at a quaint booth or makeshift shop along one of Long Island's popular routes. To see the bright greens, reds, and yellows of Long Island's seasonal harvest, in the spring, summer, and fall travel along Route 27 in the South Fork, Route 48 in Mattituck, and the Montauk Highway.
