Things to do / Travel Guide
With hundreds of miles of coast, charming coves, white sand beaches, rocky promontories, majestic lighthouses, and nature preserves, it is almost unnecessary to point out Long Island's scenic overlooks - you will happen upon them at every turn. That being said, here are a few more out of the way vistas that are captivating in their own right.
- All along the approach to Montauk Point, the easternmost point on Long Island, you can stop for beautiful views of the ocean and elegant, often-photographed Montauk Point Lighthouse. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for a lovely vantage point on the ocean and Long Island.
- At Orient Beach State Park on North Country Road, go to the beautiful wood deck observation site for breathtaking views of Gardiner's Bay.
- If you're up for a serious climb, ascend the 182 winding steps of Fire Island Lighthouse, near Robert Moses State Park. As Long Island's tallest lighthouse, the views from on top are nothing short of heavenly - and on a clear day, you'll be able to see the Manhattan skyline.
- The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located on Bald Hill Scenic Overlook, one of Long Island's highest points. From atop the memorial, enjoy panoramic views of Suffolk County.
- For breathtaking views of the North Shore's rocky and craggy shoreline, go to Sunken Meadow State Park. Walk along the raised, wooden boardwalk that borders the Long Island Sound for a unique vantage point on the white swimming beach and coastline.
- For excellent views of the Long Island Sound, head to Falaise in Nassau County. Situated on a bluff overlooking the bay, this Norman-style manor once belonged to Captain Harry Guggenheim. The interior and rear terrace provide the most spectacular views.
