Things to do / Travel Guide
Long Island is located east of New York City, at the southeastern extremity of New York State. While the buroughs of Brooklyn and Queens geographically comprise the western end of Long Island and are separated from Manhattan by the East River, Brooklyn and Queens are politically considered part of New York City. Colloquially (and politically) “Long Island” refers to Suffolk and Nassau counties. The western coast of Long Island is separated from New Jersey and Staten Island by a portion of the New York Harbor. Long Island's northern coasts are separated from Connecticut and Rhode Island by the Long Island Sound. The region's southern coasts are bordered by Great South Bay, and South Oyster Bay. Fire Island and other barrier islands block the Atlantic Ocean from directly touching Long Island's southern beaches. The eastern coastlines of Long Island are on the Atlantic Ocean.
