Theater and Live Performances on Long Island, New York
When it comes to live theater, Long Island can be considered an extension of the rich performing arts culture in Manhattan. The Tilles Center for Performing Arts in Greenvale brings the most prominent, internationally celebrated artists including Blues Traveler, Bo Diddley, and Lily Tomlin, as well as groups such as the Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Vienna Boys Choir. The Gateway Playhouse in Bellport is one of the top ten musical theaters in the U.S, featuring six shows between May and September. East Hampton's historic Guild Hall has been a long-standing cultural center offering a variety of concerts, dramas, and lectures. The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, a lovely venue with state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment. Tommy Hilfiger at the Jones Beach Theater is located within Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh. This is one of the top-ranked amphitheaters in the country and hosts famous celebrity acts, concerts, and festivals.
Comedy Clubs on Long Island, New York
Perhaps the most famous comedy club on the island is Governor's of Levittown with a second location in Medford. Governor's hosts the best national acts, including headliners (like Andrew Dice Clay) from late-night television and HBO. The Brokerage Comedy Club in Bellmore features a wide range of performers (novice stand-uppers to well-known names) during the week, but the weekend performances are the people you've seen perform on Jay Leno or The David Letterman Show.
Bars and Night Clubs on Long Island, New York
Whether you are looking to dance to disco or jive to jazz, Long Island has a wide range of clubbing options. Da Funky Phish in Bay Shore has a live music lineup of bands that play original or cover funk, reggae, rock, ska, or punk. Sgt. Pepper's Pub in Northport is a popular destination for music lovers of the British variety. The Mirage Night Club is billed as the “largest club on Long Island” and is an upscale, trendy nightspot for yuppie types. The club features Egyptian décor and its DJs play everything from techno to house. For paparazzi wannabes, the funky and surreal Posh Ultralounge located in the Garden City Hotel is a frequent hangout for celebrities on holiday. For Jazz, head over to the Stephen Talkhouse which features sell-out shows boasting national acts like The Radiators and the Maytals.
A favorite nightclub in Hampton Bays from May until the fall is the Canoe Place Inn, offering over 30,000 square feet of dance floors as well as video games, a lounge, outdoor patio, and pizzeria.
