Adventure Travel in Long Island, Hamptons, Montauk, Fire Island

Things to do / Travel Guide

For a more lofty perspective on Long Island (and a taste of danger), the region's skydiving and ballooning excursions may pique your interest. But if you'd rather wrestle with the monsters of the sea - shark hunting is something you should put on your vacation itinerary.

Skydiving over Long Island, New York

If you are looking for an intense adrenaline fix, skydive over Long Island to get a unique perspective on the Atlantic coastline, Hampton Beaches, and Fire Island. Skydiving companies are located in East Moriches, near the Hamptons, and in Calverton in Suffolk County.

Hot Air Ballooning over Long Island, New York

Elevate your mood as you slowly drift over eastern Long Island and the Hamptons in a colorful hot-air balloon. Adventures Aloft, in the town of Deer Park, offers hot-air balloon tours over Long Island's most noteworthy resort areas. After your spirits have been lifted from your hot air balloon ride you can lift spirits (literally) - each ride is finished with a champagne toast.

Shark Hunting around Long Island, New York

Another great adventure idea is shark hunting. Shark hunting is best near Montauk from June through September, and the Star Island Yacht Club or Gone Fishing Marina will help you charter a full-day shark boat for up to six people for close to $1,000. Shark hunting is far from a simple, serene day at sea - the blue and mako sharks generally weigh 450 pounds (prizewinners weigh more than 700) and often travel close to 30 miles an hour. Don't attempt this wild adventure unless you are fit enough for the fight - it usually takes two men to haul the catch into the boat. Because of the risks involved (sharks often “arrive” on board gnashing their teeth), children should not come along.
