Things to do / Travel Guide
Nevada Tourist Attractions
Known both as Sin City and one of the world's most exciting family destinations, Las Vegas is a place to hop between gambling, fine dining, top shows, world-class hiking and swimming in the middle of the desert. Nearby desert canyons and water sport opportunities at Lake Mead further enhance your visit to the region.
Las Vegas Tourist Attractions
Unlike other cities where you stay in hotels so that you can visit nearby attractions, in Las Vegas, the hotels ARE the main attractions. Each of the major hotels in Las Vegas is themed and both outside the hotel and inside the lobbies, hallways, and bedrooms, there are things to ooh and ahh at. Whether you're looking up at the Paris' Eiffel Tower, taking a gondola ride at the Venetian, or riding a roller coaster at Coney Island, you'll have more than enough to do in Vegas if you hotel hop alone.
Of course, in a city that truly never sleeps, you'll want to do much more than just gaze at the tall buildings around you; and in a city like Vegas, you'll have no trouble packing your itinerary full with activities.
The fact that you can gamble in an endless list of casinos should go without saying. Other activities (many of which are also offered throughout the night) include dining (yes, in Vegas it's an activity), star gazing (there are lots of movies filmed in Vegas, so keep your eyes peeled), shopping (many of the hotels include mini shopping malls, or you can just exit the Strip to find larger malls), and enjoying some first-class performances (Cirque du Soleil and the Blue Man Group in particular). There are also tons of free shows and events.
Las Vegas Vacation Spots
In won't be hard to find a vacation spot in Las Vegas. In a city where all the main attractions are condensed for the most part on one street ("The Strip"), it becomes pretty clear where you should stay during your Las Vegas vacation. In other words, choose a spot on the Strip and you really can't go wrong.
To upgrade your vacation a little and veer away from the Strip just a bit, consider booking a helicopter ride that takes you from the Strip (one of the article wonders of the world) to the Grand Canyon (one of the natural wonders of the world). The view from above of both areas is breathtaking.
Looking for another way to make your trip to Vegas more lavish? Check out the hotel spa scene. Some of the best spas in the world are located down the quiet corridors of some of the busiest hotels. And best of all, even the spas are themed. Checked out the Roman bath-styled spa at Caesar's Palace, for example.
Las Vegas, Nevada Getaways
Not everyone who travels to Las Vegas stays on the Strip. There are other areas to visit and other sites to see that you can include in your Nevada getaway. Especially if you're planning a trip that's longer than a few days, you may want to seriously consider checking out other options in and around Las Vegas.
There are theme parks, zoos, rock climbing walls, and golf courses in and around Las Vegas, as well as an abundance of natural beauty just minutes from the Strip—Las Vegas is, after all, located smack in the middle of a breathtaking desert. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is not too far, nor is Red Rock Canyon, two great places to hike, swim, and take in more Nevada scenery.
Last but not least, downtown Las Vegas is an often overlooked area. There's a children's museum there, plus some great shopping and dining. The Fremont Street Experience (located on Fremont Street) offers free nightly entertainment.
Las Vegas, Nevada Road Trip Getaway Planner
With so many things to do in Las Vegas and its surrounding areas, it's best to pick a few activities that best suit your travel group and aim to enjoy them to the max. It's worthwhile to devote a couple days to outdoor activities—it would be a shame to come out to the desert and not enjoy the fresh air and the desert scenery!
By the way, don't confuse Las Vegas, New Mexico with Las Vegas, Nevada. The one in New Mexico is interesting to visit, but it is 700 miles away. Make sure to tell your GPS or else expect a long trip on I-40. Much shorter, and very popular among Southern California residents is a Los Angeles to Las Vegas road trip. You won't even need a map of Las Vegas to find the place. The lights of Las Vegas shine over the horizon from many miles away.
