Things to do / Travel Guide

April

The third weekend in April sees the Las Vegas City of Light Jazz Festival take over Hills Park at Summerlin, in northwest Las Vegas. Music lovers will enjoy the jazz, rhythm and blues, and festive atmosphere.

The family-oriented Clark County Fair and Rodeo takes place every April, and brings some of the top names in rodeo to town. Held in Logandale, just outside Las Vegas, bucking horses and angry bulls compete against some of the best cowboys around. There are also lots of fairground rides for the whole family to enjoy.

June

In the third week of June, the 18-wheeler frenzy that is the annual Truck Show rolls into the Las Vegas Convention Center. If you love big, powerful engines, grease and motor oil, and everything truckin', this is the show for you!

With a plethora of gleaming trucks, most beautiful truck contests, and copious amounts of information about everything related to truck driving, from dump truck laws to inspections, this show is every trucker's dream.

August

Put on by the Best In The Desert Racing Association, the Vegas-Reno Rally through the desert and mountains of Nevada, from Las Vegas to Reno, takes place in the last week of August each year. The longest of its kind in America, the Vegas-Reno Rally runs on over 300 miles of racecourse in and around Nevada. The event draws more than 175 teams annually, with dozens of cars, trucks, and motorcycles joining in. The race takes around three days to complete and traverses the state from south to north. Presenting off-road racing at its very best, many participants consider it the adventure of a lifetime.

September

The unique and interesting Las Vegas International Mariachi Festival is held every September to commemorate Mexican Independence at the Thomas and Mack Center. Featuring instruments brought to Mexico by the Spanish in the 19th century, such as the bass guitaron, guitar, violin, and trumpet, the Mariachi Festival is quite the spectacle.
The mariachis converge on Las Vegas every year dressed in their signature sombreros and rhinestone-studded charro suits. Their music speaks about machismo, romance, betrayal, death, and Mexican revolutionary heroes.

October

Every October, the most muscular guys and gals in the world storm Las Vegas to compete in the Joe Weider's IFBB Olympia competition for the titles of Mr. Olympia, Ms. Olympia, Ms. Fitness Olympia, and Ms. Figure Olympia titles. Held at the 8000-seat Orleans Arena, the Mr. Olympia competition boasts the biggest prize in bodybuilding. The event, which started in 1965, has had many of the most famous names in the sport competing for the prestigious title, the most famous of them all having been Arnold Schwarzenegger, who dominated the sport from 1970 to 1975.

The annual Fall Grape Stomp at the Pahrump Valley Winery takes place during the first weekend in October. Visitors are invited to “get their feet wet” and can even win trophies. Others who prefer to keep their shoes on can sample the award-winning wines in the winery's tasting room. Visitors can also take a leisurely stroll through the serene rose garden, complete with a gazebo and Spring Mountains backdrop. You can even stay a few days at the new 196-site RV resort with its great clubhouse and pool.
