Things to do / Travel Guide
Refreshing runs down the slopes by day and turning up the heat on the Las Vegas Strip at night makes the Sin City an authentic all season destination. From the bargain hunter to the hipster, whether it's the 18-20 college crowds, outdoor enthusiast, food fanatic, or thrill seekers, Vegas is truly a playground.
Las Vegas Ski area is located only 45 minutes from the Strip and, as advertised, is “Real Snow – Real Close.” The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest cradles this ski area that has its own riches located on its eleven slopes and its terrain park boasting a 500 foot halfpipe off which to launch. 300 plus days of sunshine make Las Vegas Ski a pleasurable and accommodating winter retreat, which is a nice diversion from the deep freeze some resorts out West may have. Beginner to advanced trails snake down the top of this 9,370 foot summit, because in Las Vegas – you go big or you go home.
As with all things in Vegas, new and exciting experiences abound, and skiers or snowboarders can take a lesson with Marcel; a native from Switzerland who has been teaching for over 35 years and knows a thing or two about skiing! Children can benefit from the “Snowkids” program that teaches ages 4 to 12 in a non-competitive environment, and includes a lesson, lunch, and rental equipment. By the end of the day, instructors will have those little ones soaring down the hill with a confidence parents never would have thought possible! Families will converge on the friendly and wide beginner area designed with them in mind, and guaranteed to work up an appetite for more skiing and snowboarding; and also for a warm drink and meal to keep that energy going strong.
Come hungry. If any piece of advice must be given, it must be to come ready to eat as the sheer number of choices can be overwhelming. Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck have their own restaurants, while visitors having visions of becoming world travelers, but reluctant to leave United States borders, can take a seat in the Eiffel Tower, walk in China Town, surf into Roy's for Hawaiian fusion, or head south of the border for Mexican. American and 24 hour buffets top it off and, while you're munching, check out the many casinos in the lobby and suites with balconies overlooking the Strip. You can also try the budget motels, which offer HBO and proximity to everything, but for less than $500 a night. There are over 100 different lodging options for getting a good night's sleep in Vegas, no matter the budget. Finish with the lounges, adult outlets, casinos, broadway-esqe shows, or live music at a downtown bar. Sin City was built on entertainment, and pulls it off flawlessly in any season.
The snow may fly, and the air might be cold, but Las Vegas is hotter than hot this winter season. Don't miss out on this unique way to spend your days on the high slopes and your nights in the high life.
