Fishing Guide for Las Vegas, Lake Mead and the Nevada desert

Things to do / Travel Guide

Although Las Vegas is known worldwide as a gambling and entertainment hub, it also presents some great opportunities for those who love to fish.

Lake Mead is just 35 miles away from the Las Vegas Strip, attracting fishermen and sailors alike. It's an easy drive from the city to Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake in the U.S., with more than 110,000 acres of pure blue surface. Known as angler's paradise, Lake Mead was forged when the Hoover Dam staunched the Colorado River.

Home to some of the top sport fishing in the nation, Lake Mead is bursting with fish. Species include rainbow trout, large mouth and striped bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. Even some carp are occasionally caught in the lake. With easy boat access, Lake Mead is easily the most popular Las Vegas area fishing trip destination.

Lake Mojave is another favorite fishing spot. Known as the blue jewel of this desert environment, and running 67 miles from Hoover Dam to Davis Dam, Lake Mojave offers boat launch ramps, concessions, and boat rentals. Visitors can also find reasonable if not rustic overnight accommodations in the area. Large- and small-mouth bass, crappie, and rainbow trout are the indigenous species of fish found here.

Urban ponds within the city of Las Vegas are also very convenient for quick fishing expeditions while keeping the bright lights and casinos nearby. The Trail Canyon Reservoir at Chiatovich Creek northwest of Las Vegas is another popular fishing spot. Other easily-accessible fishing holes can be found in Boulder City and Mesquite. At the Eagle Valley Reservoir, both brown and rainbow trout can be found. For some other great fishing trips in the region, you can visit the Echo Canyon Reservoir or the wild Colorado River.

Fishing licenses are required for this region, but one- and two-day passes are relatively inexpensive. Out-of-state visitors' fishing permits can be purchased for anyone over the age of 16.
It is important to be aware that trout fishing requires the additional purchase of trout stamps. Happy fishing!
