Costs for Las Vegas, Lake Mead and the Nevada desert

Things to do / Travel Guide

Las Vegas boasts that it has something to accommodate every visitor's budget, and that's no exaggeration. For the budget traveler, there are bargains galore - from lodging to dining to free or inexpensive attractions. Hotel rooms can be had for as little as $30 per night, depending on the season, while many Las Vegas hotel buffets, legendary for their value, won't even set you back $10.

For people who have more money to spend, luxurious accommodations in five-star hotels are available in the $200 range. Top-end dining is plentiful and delicious, but very pricey. If you've always dreamed of ordering an eight-pound lobster, it can be ready in a jiffy, but it will set you back almost $200.

One of the words that will quickly enter your Las Vegas lexicon is “comp.” Short for complimentary, comps are commonly offered to both big winners and big spenders. The Las Vegas mega resorts are known for offering only the best, sometimes giving their “high rollers” a free night's stay in a $10,000-a-night Presidential suite. For those gamblers who don't hit the jackpot or fully empty out their own wallets, there are also free meals and show tickets to be “earned” with enough casino play.

One of the known perks in Las Vegas casinos is the free beverage service offered by most casinos to their gambling patrons. As you gamble in any casino, you'll be sure to see “casino runners” asking if you'd like a drink free of charge from the establishment.

Getting around Las Vegas is also very easy and relatively inexpensive. Regularly-scheduled bus service throughout the city costs a little more than $1 per ride, but there are also several free shuttles running between the major hotels. There's also a new monorail running length of the Strip on the east side, for which daily or weekly passes can be purchased. Taxis are also very popular, but be sure to insist on a metered ride, as many a patron has been overcharged for a “negotiated fares.
