Things to do / Travel Guide
The area around Las Vegas also offers ample opportunity to do some mountain biking.
- Many biking routes are located just a few short miles away from Red Rock Canyon National Preserve in an area known as Blue Diamond. About 15 miles from Las Vegas, the trails are suitable for riders of all levels of expertise, from beginners to professionals. The hard-packed desert floor makes the tight and twisty trails very fast, and they roll on for miles. Biking trips can last anywhere from two hours to a full day, with the trails being about 5-15 miles long, and even overnight camping trips are possible.
If you're looking for a shorter biking adventure, you can also find short trails in this area that will take from one to 1-4 hours to complete, albeit with a much-abridged view of the sights. A one-way, two-lane scenic loop is a fantastic introduction to the area; watch for other bicyclists, joggers, and even stray burros.
- Desert Shores - (2 hours) Of the multitude of master-planned communities that sprawl over the Las Vegas valley, Desert Shores, with its winding streets and man-made lakes, is a favorite for runners, joggers, power walkers, and cyclists. Located by Smoke Ranch Rd and Buffalo Dr., the area offers a quiet subdivision for bikers in the know.
There are numerous bike rental shops in Las Vegas that offer advice on which trails you are best suited for, but no rentals are available in Blue Diamond itself. Don't forget to bring along water and sunscreen, as you won't find any along the trails!
