One of the most popular and sun-soaked beaches on Kauai, Poipu Beach is a perfect blend of sparkling sand, sensational sunsets, sea and sky. Named number one in the US by Dr. Beach, the crystal clear waters off Poipu Beach are great for snorkeling, swimming, and surfing. Kids in particular will enjoy the natural wading pool here. In fact, the sheltered coves of Poipu and their gentle surf, are perfect for beginner surfers and snorkelers and the park is protected by lifeguards, making it one of the safer beaches around. Those who have come to fish will be pleased to find the adjacent Nukumoi Point reef stocked with angel fish, Moorish idols, black tangs and canary-colored butterfly fish. If you can wake early enough, a walk at dawn along the cliffs is an exhilarating experience, but swimming should be attempted only by the most experienced. The beaches of Poipu are also home to the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals who like to stretch out and rest here after a night of hunting (a Monk Seal Watch team protects the seals). The park adjacent to the beach offers restrooms, showers and picnic tables, and accommodations ranging from ultra luxury hotels and spacious condominiums to cozy bed-and-breakfasts are also available in the area, along with gourmet restaurants, shops and championship golf. Be sure not to miss a view of the Souting Horn, lava tube located further up the coast, that spits salty surf as high as 50 feet into the air. This spot makes for especially great photos at sunset when it glows with the colors of the rainbow.
