Things to do / Travel Guide
Hands down, one of the most popular activities on Kauai is snorkeling, where you can float effortlessly among a school of fantastically-colored tropical fish in the warm, clear water.
The best snorkeling is usually inside Kauai's plentiful and protected lagoons. Hundreds of species of fish live in the coral reefs, and, amazingly, one third of these fish species are only found on Kauai!
Kauai has many protected lagoons, giving visitors easy access to Hawaii's premier snorkeling venues. Add this to year-round perfect snorkeling weather and smooth, clear, warm water, and you will get an unparalleled experience for the whole family!
You can rent snorkeling equipment from one of the many dive shops located around Kauai. While snorkeling equipment can be rented for as little as $10, consider bringing your own, as the gear will tend to fit better. Below you'll find a list and description of some great snorkeling sites.
- Kee Lagoon - Excellent swimming and snorkeling can be found in this lagoon. Make sure to stay inside the reef, as there are strong currents in the channel during high surf. To get there from Lihue, take Highway 56 north to the end, which brings you to Haena, a small town on the northern side of Kauai.
- Lydgate Park - This family beach park comes complete with showers, changing rooms, drinking water, picnic areas, and an on-duty lifeguard, and is home to the famous “Kamalani Playground.” The playground is a fantastic area for kids to run, play, and enjoy the water. The lagoon is protected, so it's an excellent place for kids and beginning snorkelers. To get there, turn west off of Highway 56 onto Leho Road between Lihue and Wailua (near the Holiday Inn), and follow it right to the beach park.
- Anini Beach Park - This great beach has park facilities and good swimming and snorkeling. As there can be strong currents during high surf, be aware that this site is not recommended during the winter season. To get there, take Highway 56 north past Kilauea. Turn right on Kalihiwai Road, just past the long bridge. Turn left onto Anini Road, then go about 3 miles to the beach area.
