Things to do / Travel Guide
By Car
Driving on Kauai is very simple. With just three “major” highways, the 550, 50, and 56, the majority of the island can be traversed with simplicity. Routes 50 and 56 will get you almost anywhere you need to go around the island, while the back country is accessible via the 550.
Visitors should note that there is no way to drive completely around the island, as there are no roads along the Napali Coast, in the northwest.
All the major car rental agencies have branches on Kauai. Prices are competitive and the rates change based on availability.
Bus Service
The Kauai Bus operates a limited public bus service. There are two bus lines that run about eight times a day, four times on Saturday. There is, however, a “Door-to-Door” bus service from Hanalei to Kekaha daily, except on Sundays and holidays. The Kauai Bus also offers service to Lihue Airport (LIH) and limited service to Koloa and Poipu.
Taxis
If you don't rent a car, taxis are pretty much your only reliable way to get around Kauai. There are three major locally-owned taxi companies. In the south part of the island there is the South Shore Cab Company, while in the north part of the island there is the North Shore Cab Company. Akiko's Taxi is based out of Lihue-Kapaa. While prices are usually determined by the meter, there are also fixed prices for popular routes.
