Things to do / Travel Guide
Boogie Boarding
Kauai is a great place to go boogie boarding. Two areas on the island stand out as great places for the boogie boarding enthusiast: Shipwreck Beach and Brennecke's in the south and Hanalei Bay in the north. Boogie boards can be rented cheaply ($5-$10 a day) at many places in Hanalei in the north and Poipu in the south, or your hotel might offer the apparatus at a higher or per hour fee.
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is considered by many Kauai locals to be one of the best ways to get out into the countryside and take in the beautiful scenery. There are many stables which offer guided horseback tours, which usually come complete with either breakfast, lunch, or dinner depending on the time of the tour's departure.
Popular areas for horseback riding include the Mahaulepu Beach, near Poipu, and the area around Princeville. Things visitors might see on a horseback tour might include hidden waterfalls, secluded beaches, and animals, like axis deer, in their natural habitat. Prices for guided horseback tours start at $70 for morning and afternoon departures, and $100 for later starts.
Smith's Tropical Paradise
Smith's Tropical Paradise is an unbelievable 30 acres crammed with orchards, exotic plants, tropical birds, and peaceful lagoons. A luau banquet and live Hawaiian show takes place here on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5-9 p.m.
Kilohana Plantation Estate
If you feel like taking it easy and relaxing while doing something interesting, you can take a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride through the beautiful 35-acre Kilohana Plantation Estate. Visitors can also take a free tour of the plantation's 1930s-era mansion.
