Kauai has steep cliffs and magnificent valleys surrounded by beautiful and rugged coastline comprising this ancient volcanic paradise.
While you are welcome to bring your own bike to Kauai, the island is full of shops from which all styles of bikes can be rented along with safety gear and other biking necessities. Some of the best biking options on Kauai are listed below along with descriptions of what you're bound to see and experience along the way.
Kokee
This fun ride gives bikers a great off-road experience with a wide selection of timberline forest to choose from. All skill levels will enjoy the biking at Kokee with its mild but bumpy red dirt road. Bikers will encounter a series of mild up and down hills, but nothing too extreme. This trail is 12 miles long, and can take between 2-5 hours, depending on your skill level.
The Kalalau Trail
Bikers can catch some of the most spectacular views found anywhere in the Hawaiian Islands on the Kalalau Trail. From a high vantage point above the Pacific Ocean, the Kalalau Valley unfolds below, as you bike along. The sandy dirt track that contours this gem is best suited for intermediate bikers, due to the steeper inclines and sharp descents. The trail is about 10 miles long, and can take anywhere from 3-5 hours, depending on how long you pause to take in each gorgeous vista.
Nualolo Trail/ Awaawapuhi Trail
This trail descends through a lush, green verdant forest to the unbelievable beauty of the Napali Coast line. The trail terminates at Lolo Vista Point. Lolo Vista is a beautiful plateau some 3,000 feet above the windy cliffs of the Nualolo Valley. Bikers can combine this trail with the Awaawapuhi Trail which creates a 9-mile loop hike. Connecting these two great trails is the Nualolo Cliffs Trail. A 2.2 mile connector trail, Nualolo Cliffs Trail offers phenomenal views of the Napali coast. This combination of trails is for intermediate to expert level bikers, and takes from 4-8 hours to complete. Note that this trail is not recommended if it is raining because of several steep sections.
Waimea Canyon Trail
This is a fun bike ride that runs from the 3,500-foot-high rim of Waimea Canyon down 12 miles of smooth, winding blacktop all the way to the shore of the Pacific Ocean. There are no switchbacks, so it's all downhill, creating a fun, easy, and spectacular ride for the whole family. This trail takes about 4½ hours to complete.
