Architecture in the Hawaiian Island of Kauai

Things to do / Travel Guide

Functionality has always been the key factor in determining building styles on Kauai. Upon closer inspection, however, some exquisite architectural surprises can be found.

Grove Farm

This sugar plantation once belonged to George N. Wilcox and his nieces. The family built their home at the Grove Farm in 1864. Fully 80 acres, the site was turned into a museum in 1978 and displays the meteoric rise of the well-known family. The main house has been kept in pristine condition with the walls and a staircase made of beautiful Koa wood, found only on Kauai. Visitors will also see a tea house, wash house, and guest cottage.

Kilauea Lighthouse

Kilauea Lighthouse, built in 1913, can be found at the northernmost point of Kauai. It used to guide ships back and forth from Oriental trade routes. In 1974, its famous and powerful light was turned off and replaced by a modern low-maintenance version. The lighthouse still remains one of Kauai's most popular attractions.

Waioli Mission House

Waioli Mission House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Unusually built from coral limestone blocks in 1837, the chimney of this gem of a house was constructed by the Reverend William Alexander, who was the first missionary on Kauai. The house was beautifully restored in 1921, and ongoing restorations continue today.
