Romantic New Jersey Getaways
From the Atlantic Highlands to Cape May, the Jersey Shore is a great bet for a romantic vacation. Atlantic City is of course a big draw, and its bright-lights romance has never been brighter. But it doesn't stop at Atlantic City - the Jersey Shore is in fact a very eclectic region for the romantic. Long Branch and Belmar still shine with resorts, a lively beach scene, and fine restaurants. The Wildwoods, known for their 1950s Doo-Wop architecture and their fun and fancy boardwalk, boast five miles of white-sand beaches of high quality. And Cape May is populated with Victorian homes and inns, historic streets, and some of the East Coast's best seafood eateries.
Romantic Hotels in Atlantic City
The talk of the town is Resorts Atlantic City's new offering: Rendezvous Tower Hotel. This is a luxury hotel, but because of location - and just the whole class of the thing - a stay there is probably the ultimate anniversary present. The rooms are the largest in Atlantic City, with huge bathrooms - some with double showers. From your room at the top of this Art-Deco building, you'll have views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Boardwalk.
Aside from the Rendezvous, many of Atlantic City's hotels have romantic packages. At Absecon's Quality Inn and Suites, for example, the package gets you a suite with a heart-shaped hot tub and a king-sized bed. Come morning, wake up to hot sweet Belgian waffles. Everyone loves waffles.
Throughout the rest of the Jersey Shore, you're choice for romantic lodgings will go according to whether you prefer Victorian, Queen Anne, or Colonial. Indeed, many of the Jersey Shore's communities are dominated by quaint old neighborhoods with scores of gorgeous houses; and some of the best have been converted into bed and breakfasts.
One great bed and breakfast for you to fall head over heels with in love is in Long Branch, Cedars and Beeches. This Victorian beauty features a grand wraparound porch, twin staircases in the greeting hall that meet like a bow, and large rooms. The King rooms feature a king-sized bed, large bay windows, and hardwood floors. Breakfast is continental; following which you can make your way down to the beaches, or wander the streets of West End. The area is where a number of U.S. presidents, shipping magnates, and industrialists had their summer residences.
Romantic Cape May Getaways
You are in for a treat if you stay at the Gingerbread House Bed and Breakfast, in Cape May. Since its inception in the mid-19th century it's been a place for mainlanders to stay - and they just keep coming back! It probably owes to the curious architectural flourishes, designed in a Gothic style by a maverick carpenter. The hosts are charming and quite helpful, which always contributes to setting the scene for love. And of course the rooms are very livable. They exude a feeling of “You won't want to leave!” Antiques flourish, the wallpaper is inviting, the bathroom stylized, and each room contains an LCD TV.
Romantic Jersey Shore Restaurants
Cape May isn't just crammed with great accommodations - excellent restaurants also abound. For an eclectic eatery, with overflowing personality, (translation: high romance quotient), try the Mad Batter. Lunches and dinners are fantastic, with dishes like lamb stew, mahi mahi, and crab cakes, and they often invite musical performers to set the mood. With respect to dinner's high quality, it's breakfast where the Mad Batter shines brightest. Wake up bright and early, say 10:00 a.m., and mosey down for the Cape's best French toast. Or be daring and order the Chesapeake eggs benedict, made with jumbo lump crab meat.
For an intimate affair, darkly lit and heavy on the romance, eat at Raven and the Peach in Fair Haven. The chef here really takes joy in making the tastiest (and sometimes surprising) dishes, and you can reap what he sows. The wine list is also excellent. Ambiance is heightened by the colorfulness of the rooms, and the woods, fabrics, and textures arranged therein.
Romantic Things to do on the Jersey Shore
The Jersey Shore is an enticing destination for romantics on account of the shores, beaches, and boardwalks that border the region from north to south. After a pleasant meal, just the two of you, find a secluded portion of a beach for a hand-in-hand walk, or head to the more-populated boardwalks for an evening of soaking in the scene.
Take a gentle hike along the shore of Sandy Hook, six miles of clean, sandy ocean and bay beaches. Gaze up at the majesty of the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest operational lighthouse in the U.S. From atop Mt. Mitchill Scenic Overlook, catch glimpses of Sandy Hook Bay, the beach down below, and New York City far off in the distance.
Romantic Atlantic City Getaways
Atlantic City's boardwalk scene is every bit as good as Monopoly makes it out to be. Join in the revelers, the scores of lovers there for poker, but especially for a really good time. There are endless bars and clubs at which to enjoy a drink in the party atmosphere, just across the street from the beach. Ride to the top of the Ferris wheel, then down - then up, then down. Don't forget to hold hands, and don't forget there's more to do up there than just look out at the good view.
Now if you're looking for an activity that's a bit more eclectic, maybe even a little eccentric, for your weekend romance fling, may we recommend a stay in the Wildwoods. Even if Doo-Wop isn't your thing, you'll have a wonderful time wandering around all the period architecture, sharing saltwater taffies, and taking another ride up on the Ferris wheel. Wildwoods' Boardwalk reminds you of what Atlantic City's looked before the casinos arrived.
For those of you romantics that enjoy happening beach scenes, the Jersey Shore has a lot to offer. For those of you that appreciate a quiet moment at an ocean overlook, or an ambience-filled evening with good food and wine, then a romantic getaway to the Jersey Shore might be on the horizon. It's a region with plenty of ideas for the in-love crowd, with the ocean often just a block away or less.
