Taking a short trip to the east or west of I-95 you'll see why New Jersey is referred to as the “Garden State.” In fact, among the many places from which you can enjoy the natural beauty of this state are the golf courses along the famed Jersey Shore region. Be advised, however, that shorelines have beaches, and beaches have sand. You'll find bunkers aplenty in this region.
Pine Barrens is designed to make each hole feel like it exists completely separately from the others, so you'll enjoy peace and tranquility in 18 unique settings. As we hinted, there's a lot of sand and the greens are large, so the bonus for missing the beach is huge.
Not far from the region's southernmost point is Sand Barrens where, as the name implies, you'll have trouble staying out of the desert. Some of the many bunkers you'll encounter here are so deep they've earned nicknames. Two the most infamous are "Halfway to Hell'' and ``The Coffin.'' Fortunately, they have steps.
Another beautiful, sandy experience is waiting at Twisted Dune. You won't find many trees to block your ball, but if you miss the fairway you'll likely end up in a trap. Management claims it takes extra time between foursomes to ensure the privacy of your golf experience.
The Blue Heron Pines Golf Club East Course is a Scottish-style course that some have called the very best in the Jersey Shore region. You'll enjoy open vistas and rolling fairways but very few trees to act as hazards on this links-style course. The major difficulty is on the greens, so bring your putting game.
Hominy Hill has been called New Jersey's #1 public golf course. What makes it so good? Different opinions abound, but 138 bunkers offer the hint that accurate play is rewarded. The layout has been called "awesome," and the greens "fast." It's a good test.
