From the northern reaches of the New Jersey shore in Middletown, south through Lakewood and Barnegat Light to the southern tip of New Jersey, near Cape May there are pleasant gardens worth a relaxing visit.

Deep Cut Gardens

Besides being a valuable source of inspiration and information to home gardeners, the Deep Cut Gardens feature Butterflies and Hummingbirds. Located off the Garden State Parkway, exit 114 at Middletown.


Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum

Georgian Court University , located in Lakewood, off the Garden State Parkway, exit 91 is the site of George Jay Gould's estate. The entire campus is an Arboretum, named after the chairperson of the biology department, none other than Sister Mary Grace Burns. The five gardens span the range from an authentic Japanese Garden to local Pine Barrens flora.

Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens

Visitors to Long Beach Island, accessible off the Garden State Parkway exit 63, can combine a visit to the Barnegat Light Historical Society Museum with some time in the compact garden in the museum grounds.

Travelers heading all the way down to Leamings Run Gardens in Swainton, which claims to have the largest collections of annuals in the United States.
