Kona Village Resort

Things to do / Travel Guide

Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:

To experience relaxing Hawaii as it was meant to be, you must experience Kona Village Resort. You'll leave feeling rejuvenated, happy, and worry-free—that is, if you can force yourself to leave at all!

At Kona Village Resort, you have three options for accommodations. Choose from three different zones of hales, or individual thatched roof bungalows, free of electric appliances inside—experience going to sleep and waking up with the sun, the way it's supposed to be done! The Sand hale zone is near a freshwater spring and is best for families. The Lava hale zone is set among black lava rock formations and has a fantastic ocean view, great for honeymooners. Finally, the Lagoon hale zone is surrounded by greenery and tropical birds and fish. Within each hale zone, you can also choose among different styled hales, which vary by architecture, size, and views. When you arrive to your hale, don't forget to put a coconut outside your door, as a Hawaiian "Do Not Disturb" symbol.

Although there is no radio, TV, or telephone inside the hales, there are several other enticing services available at the resort, such as tropical punch and the donning of a fresh flower lei upon your welcomed arrival, laundry facilities, complimentary self-parking, Internet, and a library of books. For your convenience, inside each room you will find adult-sized bathrobes and slippers, local coffee and drinks, a private Jacuzzi, and a relaxing ambiance.

Your reservation allows you to take part in several activities at the resort. Guests enjoy use of tennis courts and have access to the fitness facility and saunas. There are also outrigger canoe excursions, arts and crafts activities such as shell hunting and lei making, historical, botanical tours, ping pong, shuffleboard, and two fresh-water swimming pools. Feel free to use any of the resort's ocean equipment such as snorkel gear, kayaks, sailboats, boogie boards, and surfboards. Need a break? Relax in one of the resort's many hammocks scattered throughout the premises. There are also daily children's programs. However, keep in mind that the children's programs are not available in May or September, which are designated "adults-only" months. Therefore, if you're planning a honeymoon to Hawaii and want to stay at Kona Village Resort, May or September are the best choices.

For additional fees, guests can also enjoy spa services, deep sea fishing, scuba diving excursions, snorkeling excursions, tennis lessons, horseback riding, golfing, and helicopter adventures. If you would like to travel off of the resort, there are also on-site car rentals available.

Entertainment options are varied and fun! On Wednesday and Friday evenings you can enjoy an Aha'aina, or lu-au, dinner and show. On Tuesday evenings you can join in the Paniolo (cowboy) Night barbeque or go to the General Manager's Cocktail Reception. On Thursday evenings you can take part in the Honeymooner's Sunset Mai Tai Reception. Every night there are other excellent entertainment options at the Bora Bora Bar.

In terms of dining, you will enjoy every meal at Kona Village Resort. The resort offers an island-inspired breakfast, lunch and dinner every day at the oceanfront. Early in the morning, guests can also enjoy coffee and pastries. If you would like to explore the surrounding area, box lunches or lunch vouchers are available for select island restaurants.

Outside the resort in the nearby town of Hualalai, you will find more shopping, dining, entertainment, and lodging. For an authentic Hawaiian meal, try the Bamboo Restaurant or Alan Wong's Hualalai Grille at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai—another great place to stay overnight. Another recommended accommodation is the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii.

During the day, you can buy authentic Hawaiian products at the King's Shops at Waikoloa Village or the Kawaihae Harbor Center. View some local art at the Ackerman Fine Art Gallery, the Nanbu Gallery, or the Rankin Gallery. There are also several relaxing spas, such as the Spa Without Walls at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii. For nighttime entertainment outside the resort, go dancing at the Honu Bar, Malolo Lounge, or Polo Bar. For a quick drink before hitting the clubs, stop by the bar at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel or the Waikoloa Beach Marriott.

Other fun daytime activities include a visit to the Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area or a day at the Anaeho'omalu Beach, which has unique golden sand mixed with black lava grains and is great for swimming, windsurfing, snorkeling, and diving. Snorkel gear, kayaks, and boogie boards are available for rent. You can also go for a romantic walk along the walking trail which follows the coastline.

It is recommended that you book your reservation online before you go, and take advantage of the promotions that are often offered, which will save you money on recreational activities, and maybe even grant you a night or two for free!
