Things to do / Travel Guide
Come watch the Hawaiian sunrise over the mango trees! The 80-foot Rainbow Falls is a tropical oasis and a true Hawaiian icon.
Rainbow Falls is preserved in a public park, and the wondrous beauty you'll see here is well worth the trip. It's suggested that visitors to the Falls arrive early in the morning to catch the mist churned out by the Falls which creates a clear rainbow, and to watch the water spill into a big round natural pool surrounded by wild ginger. Near the waterfalls are the Boiling Pots, pools whose water rolls and brews due to the geological processes that are still changing the topography of the Big Island. In addition to its incredible natural beauty, Rainbow Falls is also culturally significant to Hawaiians. According to legend, Hina, the mother of Maui, still lives in the cave behind the Falls.
Visitors should try to plan a visit on a weekday to avoid crowds and make the most of their experience. Rainbow Falls is free of charge, and located in Hilo. To get here, drive up Wainuenue, turn right on Rainbow Drive, and the parking lot will be on your right. If you're traveling in Hawaii, make sure not to miss this unspoiled natural treasure!
