Things to do / Travel Guide
Meaning long spear in Hawaiian, Pololu Valley was renowned for its crimson--stemmed taro farms prior to European colonization. Today, visitors can enjoy hikes on trails that cut across the valley, which is fronted on the ocean side by a magnificent black sand beach, and explore the yellow sand dune which protects areas inland from the occasional fury of the ocean. A relatively short hike on a graded trail leads to the bottom of the valley and the trail continues beyond the valley, climbing over a ridge to the neighboring Honokane Nui Valley. Pololu Valley is located at the end of Highway 270 in North Kohala. On your drive up Highway 270, be sure to stop off for a bite to eat in the quaint town of Hawaii.
