Meaning "forever beautiful" in Hawaiian, the 20 acres of landscaped displays of native and exotic tropical flowers and plants, along with spectacular orchid garden, rare palms and tropical fruit orchards ensure that Nani Mau Gardens lives up to its name. Located about 4 miles form Hilo town and 25 miles northeast of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Nani Mau Gardens opened to the public in 1972. Visitors can explore the botanical museum and learn about the history of Hawaiian flora, either with a self-guided tour or a guided tour by tram.
The Nani Mau Gardens houses more than 2,000 plant varieties, including approximately 225 types of flowering plants, 100 species of fruit trees, and over 2,300 orchids. Take your time and stroll through the anthurium grove, see the Japanese-style bell tower, and peruse the European garden, fruit orchard, and ginger garden. Kids will love the butterfly house, and everyone is sure to enjoy the intriguing Japanese gardens. And should you get hungry, there's a café with a lunch buffet on site!
