Our Nature Nut Says:

Within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a revered National Park and World Heritage Site, lies both the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. The volcanic activity stemming from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park led to the creation of Punaluu Black Sand Beach and some of the other black sand beaches, for which Hawaii is famous. Fascinating volcanic features dot the park, such as fumaroles, cinder cones, calderas, and lava tubes (you can actually walk right through the tunnel called the Thurston Lava Tube). There are excellent hikes available (over 120 miles of trails), ranging from easy to very challenging, and two great scenic drives. All promise dramatic vistas you'll remember for a lifetime.

From Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Hawaii Big Island:

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa, at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been honored as an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.
