Akaka Falls - Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

Our Nature Nut Says:

Witness the wonders of Hawaii's tropical rain forests. Smell the jungle flowers, and feel the lush vegetation of bamboo and enchanting ferns embrace you as you wind your way along the loop trail to Akaka Falls.

Located on Kolekole Stream, the Akaka Falls can be viewed from several points along the 0.4 mile loop trail. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for palm trees, banana plants, banyan trees, bamboo groves, and impatiens. There are plenty of great photo opportunities here too, even at the cascading miniature water falls and fertile, damp forest you'll traverse on the trail.

Meaning "a split" or "chink," the water at Akaka Falls is truly a spectacular site as it flows down into a foaming pool, surrounded by fragrant ginger of whites, yellows and reds. Akaka Falls is only a short drive from Hilo so if you're in the area, this site should not be missed. There is a parking lot at Akaka Falls with restroom facilities by the parking area.

To reach Akaka Falls, take Route 19 to Route 220 and follow the signs to Akaka Falls State Park, which is about 3 miles from the intersection of 19 and 220.
