Our Museum Expert Says:

The Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hawaii is dedicated to the awareness and education about Tsunamis in the Hawaii and Pacific Region. With numerous exhibits, photos and living survivor videos, you will certainly get an education at this fascinating museum. Tsunami devastation is well documented and recoded at the museum, and you will have a chance to see how it has affected the cultural and social history of Hawaii.

The Pacific Tsunami Museum houses a modest collection of tsunami photographs, maps, scientific papers, documents, videos and artifacts showcasing the history and affects of tsunamis on our world. The photos depict the aftermath of a tsunami, particularly on the town of Hilo, and an extensive video collection of over 1000 videos is on demand with historic footage, computer models and survivor interviews in Japanese, German, Spanish and French.

Exhibits at the Pacific Tsunami Museum include a model of Hilo pre-1946 tsunami, a tsunami warning simulator, an exhibit on Papua New Guinea, an exhibit on the science of tsunamis, and even a parking meter (after suffering the disastrous effects of a tsunami). Visitors will witness amazing rescues and the "Tsunami Map Viewer" allows viewers to see all the evacuation zones in Hawaii and how the island has prepared for a future tsunami.

At the Tsunami Museum Store, you will find tsunami themed items and such as clothes, mugs, jewelry, videos, DVDs, posters, puzzles and books.

You'll find the Pacific Tsunami Museum at the corner of Kameharneha Ave. and Kalakua St. Take the Hawaii Belt Rd. (10) and head west onto Saddle Rd. Make a quick left onto Kameharneha Ave. and you'll see the museum a block down.
