Our History Buff Says:

See a 175 mile Hawaiian trail filled with authentic culture and history! The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail winds through hundreds of ancient Hawaiian settlements and over 200 ahupua'a, mountain to shore land divisions.

The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail was established in 2000 to preserve and protect traditional Native Hawaiian culture and natural resources, temples, fishponds, petroglyphs, and sacred places that can all be found along the picturesque trail. The trail office was officially opened in 2001, a delay due to various issues relating to the sensitivity of the cultural and natural resources that exist along the trail; and while some of the sections are now accessible to the public under state and county jurisdiction, there are still some areas of the trail that are unavailable to the public. Nevertheless, Ala Kahakai is a treasure trove of nature, from anchialine ponds, nearshore reefs, and estuarine ecosystems to coastal vegetation, migratory birds, and native sea turtle habitats—great scenery and activity that the whole family will enjoy! There are also several threatened and endangered endemic species of plants and animals here as well, so keep your eyes open for some exciting wildlife!

Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is located along the coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Access can be gained from Spencer County Beach Park, where there is also camping available. Enjoy your trip to this stunning haven of Hawaiian wildlife, nature, and culture!
