Our History Buff Says:

Visit the sacred King Kamehameha the Great's personal temple and experience Hawaiian history from the early 1800s! According to Hawaiian tradition, this spot is where King Kamehameha the Great ruled his kingdom after he united the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1800's. Ahuena Heiau is the site of King Kamehameha's thriving village and sacred ceremonial temple of old Hawaiian religion.

Ahuena Heiau is located on a tiny peninsula across from Kamakahonu Beach and the King Kam Hotel on the Big Island. Visitors to Ahuena Heiau are not allowed onto the temple grounds, but you can get close enough for a good look at it. This ancient heiau is a lot like other grass huts nearby, such as those on the King Kamehameha Hotel luau grounds, and consists of stone walls, scattered stones around it, and a grass roof. From across the bay on the Kailua Pier, visitors can enjoy a great view of Ahuena Heiau, as well as see the interesting carved tiki idols onsite, which add to the uniqueness of the temple.

The temple is behind the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel at the end of Palani Road in Kailua-Kona and can easily be seen from the Kailua Pier. Enjoy your mystical, historical, and fun experience at this bit of Hawaiian history!
