Punaluu Black Sand Beach - Big Island, Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

Address:Big Island, Hawaii

Our Beach Bum Says:

The wild Pacific Ocean has crushed lava from deep below the surface of the earth to create one of the most unique beaches you will experience. Jet black lava, foaming white surf, and deep blue water all backed by tall cocoanut trees make this one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Not enough? Scores of freshwater springs bubble cold water up into the ocean.

The bay is rocky, but usually good for swimming, and snorkeling with the "honu" green sea turtles. The freshwater pond at the far end of Punaluu Black Sand Beach is perfect for rinsing off with exotic ducks and local fish. As a bonus, the black lava granules provide free foot massages. Consider overnight camping to see hawksbill turtles nesting on the beach at night and laying their eggs. Do not draw too close, however, as the turtles are an endangered species and it is illegal even to touch them.

There are very few accessible black sand beaches in the world, because they are only created and naturally maintained under very rare conditions. There must be at least one active volcano present, in this case both Mauna Loa and Kileaua, that produces a lava flow that reaches as far as the sea.. Upon reaching the sea, the lava must explode to forms the black sand, with the waves eroding the beaches over time.

The beach is quite remote and non-commercial. Picnic facilities, showers and restrooms are provided. Camping is allowed and is free of charge.

The beach is on Highway 11 in the remote Kau district, about an hour drive from Volcano National Park and Hilo or slighly less than 2 hours if coming from the main tourist centers around the Kona coast. Take the turnoff marked "Sea Mountain Resort". Get here now before its too late, new lava flows tend to cover whatever is in their way – including roads, towns and beaches.
