Address:Big Island, Hawaii

Our Beach Bum Says:

Welcome to a one of only two green sand beaches in the whole world! Green Sand Beach, also known as Papkolea Beach and Puu Mahana is located near the southern most tip of the U.S., just six miles from South Point (a great hike!) on Big Island. This special beach offers visitors a good look at a classic Hawaiian landscape filled with volcanoes, beaches, and a whole lot of green!

The unique green sand, made from olivine crystals (better known as peridot) comes from the cinder cone which has recently become more and more eroded by its neighboring ocean. The area is not as much a swimming spot as it is a hiking spot and if planned well can be a beautiful day trip filled with rugged and calm moments, and always filled with the majestic sites that Hawaii is famous for.

While nearby South Point is the more popular destination, visitor are welcome to venture down to Green Sand Beach as well. But take note: The crystal-like green sands can be very rough on bare feet, so make sure you wear good shoes – no flip flops! Getting to Green Sand Beach also requires a climb down the cinder cone, so it is only accessible by foot. The area just before the cone is accessible via a 4wd vehicle as well. Bring lots of water and have fun at this unique and beautiful beach – one of the world's greatest wonders!
