Nature and Wildlife in Hilo, Kona, Volcano, Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii

Things to do / Travel Guide

For the whale watchers among you, Humpback whales are found in the waters between Maui and Hawaii roughly between December and April. Particular about their water temperature preference, they usually spend summers in the North Pacific - as far up as Alaska. There are whale watching boat tours that leave from the Kailua-Kona area, but it is also possible to see whales from land. Good locations to spot the ocean mammals are on the beach near the Natural Energy Lab in North Kona and off the North Kohala coast - especially from Mookini Heiau.

The Big Island also offers bird watchers the best opportunities to view native Hawaiian birds.
Prime bird watching areas include Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Kipuka Puaulu) and Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. Experienced bird watchers can spot the nene goose, akiapolaau, nukupuu, palila, io, and the alala. There are not many of these birds left in the wild.

Waipio Valley is home to wild versions of domesticated animals, including horses and cattle.

Finally, Manta Rays can be observed during a night diving session or, without having to get wet, from the illuminated lookout at the Mauna Kea Resort.
